Oklahoma Sooners claim fourth straight victory in Women's College World Series softball championship
Players from the Sooners eagerly jumped into the pitching circle, celebrating their win in the second game of a best-of-three series. This exciting moment took place at Devon Park in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where enthusiastic spectators roared their support.
Head coach Patty Gasso, who matched the record for the most national championships as a head coach in NCAA Division I softball, described their achievement as "unimaginable." In a wonderful turn of events, the Sooners managed to take a 5-3 lead in the fourth inning, but the Longhorns tried to catch up with a third base infield hit from Mia Scott. Despite this, the Sooners managed to bring back their lead, with Jayda Coleman's single in the sixth inning. Ella Parker then finished it off with a two-run single.
Oklahoma's starting pitcher, Kelly Maxwell, made sure the lead was sealed in the final inning. She retired Longhorns' Katie Stewart to ground out to third, completing the Sooners' record-breaking fourth straight NCAA Championship title.
Coach Gasso emphasized that the team's unwavering determination and grit had played a significant role in their success. "We play the blue-collar way," she explained. "We fight and grind. There's nothing we think we can't overcome, and that's why we go out there and just play free. I can't believe this," she added.
Gasso reiterated that achieving four consecutive title wins for the program was an unbelievable feat. The win also boosts the ranking of the No. 2 seeded Oklahoma squad, as this is their eighth title in the history of their program, tying them with the University of Arizona for second place with the most championships. The record-holders, the University of California, Los Angeles, boast an impressive 12 titles.
