NRW authorities prohibited from employing German flags.

The anticipation mounts as the German football squad Secures a spot in the round of 16 for the tournament. Yet, cops in North Rhine-Westphalia are still barred from displaying their support for the national team, despite the Federal Interior Minister Faeser reversing the ban for the Federal Police.

Cops in North Rhine-Westphalia are still forbidden to adorn their patrol cars with German flags during the European Football Championship. A directive issued by the North Rhine-Westphalia Interior Ministry cautions that "the display of flags, wimpels or similar for the police carries a special responsibility and is thus best avoided." At the initial stages of the tournament, Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) had revoked the wimpel ban for the Federal Police.

Faeser informed the "Bild" newspaper that Germany flags could be fitted to the vehicles of the Federal Police during the EM. The ban was temporarily lifted due to concerns related to neutrality during the competition. Faeser added that the Federal Police will continue to uphold their duties with "the same impartiality, neutrality, and high professionalism we are familiar with."

Since the Federal Interior Minister only governs over the Federal Police, deployed at places like train stations and airports, the individual states are responsible for creating flag rules for their numerous police forces. In response to an inquiry, the North Rhine-Westphalia Interior Ministry expressed, "Professional police work takes on significant importance in portraying Germany as a welcoming and open nation during the UEFA EURO 2924. Neutrality and objectivity of the NRW police are especially significant in this context." Hence, the restriction persists.
