After cup injury - Now DFB star Wirtz has his say
Shortly before the break, Wirtz was kicked on the ankle by Paderborn striker Filip Bilbija (23). Wirtz limped into the dressing room with a contorted face.
Many at Bayer and in the stands will have thought of March 13, 2022 at that moment: That was when the international tore his cruciate ligament against 1. FC Köln in the BayArena. Wirtz's premature retirement overshadowed Leverkusen's cup success.
On Tuesday evening, Wirtz spoke out via Instagram - and (at least) cautiously gave the all-clear after the shock of the kick.
Wirtz wrote (in English) to his 467,000 followers: "Good performance by the team. Next round! Thanks for the recovery wishes. I hope to be back on Sunday."
Because Leverkusen play at sensational VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga on Sunday (3.30 pm).
Hofmann believes Wirtz will play for VfB
His team-mate Jonas Hofmann (31), who came on for the stricken Wirtz shortly before the half-time whistle, is confident that Bayer's number 10 will not be out for long: "He's tough. I think he'll be involved on Sunday."
Wirtz was last absent from a Bayer game last Thursday, when he was rested against Häcken (2-0) in the Europa League due to muscular problems.
