Novak Djokovic rages against "disrespectful" British fans
Novak Djokovic has no trouble against Great Britain in the Davis Cup quarter-finals with his Serbians. But after his two-set victory against Cameron Norrie, he rages against the British fans. They had tried to drown out his speech. More calm expected in the match against an old rival in the semi-finals.
Grand Slam record champion Novak Djokovic clashed with British fans after the Serbian quarter-final victory at the Davis Cup in Malaga. "There was disrespect throughout the match," complained the 36-year-old after his 6:4, 6:4 win over Cameron Norrie in the second singles and confronted the supporters after the match. The British fan group should "learn how to behave".
The supporters had tried to drown out Djokovic's victory speech with drums after the end of the match. "I tried to talk and they deliberately started drumming to stop me talking," explained the world number one: "It's normal for fans to cross the line and in the heat of the moment you also have to react and show that you won't allow this kind of behavior"
The spectators could "do what they want, but I will react to it", Djokovic explained. He had already felt disturbed by the British fans during the match and put his hand to his ear after every point he won in the second set. "They were trying to annoy me the whole match, so we ended up having a bit of a chat," said the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
Djokovic will meet Jannik Sinner again in the semi-finals
His Serbians booked their place in the semi-finals with a 2-0 win over Great Britain. Djokovic will meet Jannik Sinner again there. Just last Sunday, the world number one had defeated the South Tyrolean in the final of the ATP Finals in Turin. In Serbia's victory against Great Britain, Miomir Kecmanovic beat his opponent Jack Draper 7:6 (7:2), 7:6 (8:6) in the first singles match, giving Djokovic the advantage to win the match.
Serbia must now get Italy out of the way to win their second Davis Cup title since 2010. They advanced to the semi-finals against the Netherlands thanks in particular to two strong performances from Sinner. In the decisive doubles match, the 22-year-old, who was unstoppable on his own serve, defeated the duo Tallon Griekspoor/Wesley Koolhof alongside Lorenzo Sonego in two hard-fought sets 6:3, 6:4. Sinner had already won the singles match 7:6 (7:3), 6:1 against Griekspoor. Matteo Arnaldi lost against Botic van de Zandschulp 7:6 (8:6), 3:6, 6:7 (7:9).
The second semi-final will be contested by Finland, who eliminated defending champions Canada, and Australia after beating the Czech Republic. The final will be played on Sunday (4 p.m./DAZN).
Despite the tense encounter with the British fans, Novak Djokovic showcases his strong tennis game, securing a victory against Cameron Norrie in the Davis Cup quarter-finals. In the upcoming semifinals, Djokovic will face a familiar foe, as he will once again challenge Jannik Sinner, whom he recently defeated at the ATP Finals in Turin.
