Nicola Coughlan's Hot Red Couture Shines as 'Bridgerton's' Look of the Week
Recently at the Toronto red-carpet premiere, actress Coughlan wore a fabulous outfit that stood out. She appeared in a lavender mini dress made of silk organza with a petal-like texture. The outfit also included a voluminous red cloak perfect for the early 19th century. This couture creation was the work of designer Sara Mrad, and once again highlighted Coughlan's amazing curves due to exaggerated silhouettes, designed by her stylist Aimée Croysdill.
Coughlan is known for her audacious and striking appearances on the red carpet. One notable moment was at the Met Gala in 2022, where she wore a pink and black Richard Quinn ball gown. During her "Bridgerton" press tour, she made even bigger statements. In April, she bedazzled at a London event with a 22-karat gold-plated corset by MISHO that had an anatomical heart. Last month, she donned a stunning white peplum gown by Danielle Frankel at the New York premiere. She also made sure to accessorize with a red pin symbolizing her support for a ceasefire in Palestine.
This season has been a significant one for her character, Penelope, as well as for Coughlan. Penelope's role at court has led the former "Derry Girls" actor to become a leading lady. In an interview with Stylist magazine, Coughlan expressed her intention to control her own image, stating, "There's one scene where I'm very naked on camera, and that was my idea, my choice. It just felt like a massive 'f*** you' to all the conversations surrounding my body; it was incredibly empowering."
While Coughlan's stylish clothing speaks for itself, she's also learned to handle her fans' opinions about her appearance. She acknowledged the difficulty of dealing with constant criticism on her looks, writing on Instagram, "It's really hard to take the weight of thousands of opinions on how you look being sent directly to you every day."
Yet, Coughlan displayed her trademark sense of humor when asked about her "bravery" in showing her body on screen at the Dublin premiere. She cleverly responded, "You know it is hard because I think women with my body type -— women with perfect breasts — don't get to see themselves on screen enough." She then added, "I hope you enjoy them."
