Next flop for Hopp: No World Darts Championship

For Max Hopp, the 2023 darts year will end in a flop. However, another tournament in the near future is more important to him than a World Cup ticket.

Next flop for Hopp: No World Darts Championship

The year 2023 ends with another sporting disappointment for former German darts champion Max Hopp.

In the Super League, in which a ticket for the World Championship in London (December 15 to January 3) is played out, Hopp lost 3:6 to the rather unknown Kai Gotthardt in the round of 16.

After 2022 and 2023, this will be the third time in a row that the "Maximiser" will not be at Alexandra Palace. The days when Hopp was the German number one are long gone.

World Cup ticket would have been a bonus

For the 27-year-old, the World Cup would have been something of a bonus after a very poor season. According to Hopp, it is more important for him to win back a tour card at the so-called Q-School in January in order to be able to play more high-paying and important tournaments again in the future.

"It can click after years," said Hopp. Before the final day of the German Super League, three Germans had already qualified for the World Championships: World Championship semi-finalist Gabriel Clemens, Martin Schindler and Ricardo Pietreczko.

Despite Max Hopp's aspiration to regain his tour card at the Q-School in January, his disappointing performance in the Super League prevented him from securing a World Championship ticket, as he lost to Kai Gotthardt in the round of 16. This marked the third consecutive year that Hopp, a former German darts champion, missed the World Darts Championship organized by the PDC.
