Art exhibition - New selection committee appointed for next documenta
After the resignation of the selection commission of documenta 16 at the end of the previous year, the supervisory board of the art exhibition in Kassel appointed a new committee. "I am convinced that the multifaceted professional composition of the new selection commission will lead to a groundbreaking proposal for the artistic direction," said Andreas Hoffmann, the managing director of documenta and Museum Fridericianum gGmbH, in a statement. "This lays the foundation for the international art world to once again feel at home in Kassel."
Documenta 15 was overshadowed by discussions on antisemitism
The documenta 15 scheduled for 2022 was overshadowed by international discussions on antisemitism. In November 2023, a member of the selection committee for the planned documenta 16 resigned due to antisemitism allegations. Later, the entire selection committee stepped down. The committee is responsible for proposing an artistic direction for the upcoming art exhibition.
The newly selected members stand out with their proven expertise and the diversity of their backgrounds, explained Hoffmann. "With their engagement in the selection committee, they demonstrate a high level of responsibility for contemporary art and documenta during this unique time."
Composition of the committee
The members of the selection committee are Yilmaz Dziewior, art historian and director of the Museum Ludwig in Cologne; Sergio Edelsztein, freelance curator; N'Goné Fall, curator, professor, and expert in cultural politics; and Yasmil Raymond, curator who is still the rector of the Städel School in Frankfurt and director of Portikus until the end of July. Additionally, Gridthiya Gaweewong, artistic director of the Jim Thompson Art Center in Bangkok, and Mami Kataoka, director of the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, are part of the committee.
Documenta is considered one of the most important exhibitions for contemporary art alongside the Venice Biennale. The 16th edition of the show is scheduled to take place in Kassel from June 12 to September 19, 2027.

The resignation of the selection committee for documenta 16 in 2023 was due to antisemitism allegations, which overshadowed the scheduled documenta 15 in 2022. The newly selected members, including Gridthiya Gaweewong from Bangkok and Mami Kataoka from Tokyo, will contribute to the 16th edition of Documenta, considered one of the most significant contemporary art exhibitions in Germany, taking place in Kassel from 2027.
