Prince William - New role at the Football Association

Prince William (42) continues to show his support for English football. Most recently, he waved the Three Lions flag at the European Championship in Germany. It was announced on Wednesday (24. July) that the Royal is now taking on a new role in the highest-ranking English Football Association (FA).

Old position will not be filled anew

William, who has been President of the FA since 2006, is now appointed as its Patron. "The patronage was previously held by Queen Elizabeth II., and after her death, the Royal Household conducted a comprehensive review of the royal patronages and presidencies of charitable organizations", according to the FA's statement. Since 1939, a member of the royal family has served as President to support the Patron of the organization in this role. "Given the active role of His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales, within the Football Association, the position of President will not be filled at this time", it is concluded.

In a post on X, Prince William reacted to his new role. Additionally, it is mentioned that the Royal is taking on other patronages, such as for the Welsh Guards Charity for Soldiers and Veterans or the agricultural organization Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association. At Fields in Trust, William is also becoming the Patron. This is stated: "It is an honor for the Prince of Wales to take on new patronages and responsibilities for some incredible organizations. We are thrilled to support their important work and make a difference together!"

Following the accession of King Charles III. (75) to the throne, "a comprehensive review of over 1,000 royal patronages and charitable presidencies was conducted", Buckingham Palace announced in May. Accordingly, the King and Queen Consort Camilla (77) will "continue to take on the patronage for many of the charities and institutions that Their Majesties were associated with as Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall". Furthermore, the couple is looking forward to continuing the patronage over a multitude of welfare organizations that were previously supported by Queen Elizabeth II. (1926-2022). "Other members of the royal family will also take on the patronage of a series of organizations that were previously supported by the late Queen to complement their existing portfolios."

  4. The Welsh Guards Charity for Soldiers and Veterans, Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association, and Fields in Trust are among the other patronages that Prince William is now taking on.
  5. Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, a comprehensive review of over 1,000 royal patronages and charitable presidencies was conducted, and King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla will continue to take on the patronage for many of the charities and institutions previously supported by Queen Elizabeth II.
