New BVB coaching team: One legend comes, one goes

Another former player joins Borussia Dortmund's coaching staff: Lukasz Piszczek. The Pole, who played for the Black and Yellows for eleven years, will be Nuri Sahin's assistant. According to the club's announcement, former BVB legend Sahin will be supported by Joao Tralhao and Ertugrul Arslan.

Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund has completed its coaching staff. Following Nuri Sahin's promotion to head coach as Terzic's successor, Lukasz Piszczek is now the new assistant coach. The club announced that Sahin, along with Joao Tralhao and Ertugrul Arslan, will provide support.

Tralhao and Arslan have previously worked with Sahin at Turkish first division club Antalyaspor, before the 35-year-old joined BVB as Terzic's assistant in January. "We have managed to put together a trio with many competencies and good ideas that will work well with Nuri," explained BVB sports director, Lars Ricken.

Moreover, Piszczek, who most recently worked as a player-coach at his hometown club LKS Goczalkowice-Zdroj, has joined the team. The 39-year-old played for BVB from 2010 to 2021, made 382 appearances, and won the league title twice, the cup three times, and celebrated his farewell game with Jakub Blaszczykowski in September. He was previously a player-coach at LKS Goczalkowice. "Lukasz was my first choice, as it was clear that Sven unfortunately would not be able to stay with the BVB for the new season. I had a special bond with Sven, I would have loved to continue working with him," said Sahin.

The previous assistant coaches Sven Bender and Sebastian Geppert have left. According to the announcement, Bender is no longer available to Borussia Dortmund "due to his private environment and personal coach development in the new season." Bender played for the BVB from 2009 to 2017, making 224 appearances for the team.

Sahin will be the youngest member of the BVB coaching staff at 35 years old, while his former teammate Piszczek is four years older. "We quickly built a great relationship of trust in our conversations," said sporting director Sebastian Kehl. "With this constellation, Nuri's coaching team is well-equipped. The three of them, with their different experience values in various areas, will help us achieve our goals."

Nuri Sahin, the former player who joined Borussia Dortmund's coaching staff, will be the youngest member at 35 years old. Alongside him, Lukasz Piszczek, the veteran defender who played for BVB for eleven years, has been appointed as Sahin's assistant in the Soccer Bundesliga.
