"Netflix Declares 'Happy Gilmore' Sequel in the Works"
A follow-up to the popular movie "Happy Gilmore" is underway, Netflix confirmed in a Facebook post on Wednesday, with Adam Sandler set to return as the hilarious protagonist.
Sandler co-wrote the 1996 film, in which he played a failed ice hockey player who undergoes a tumultuous, sometimes violent, changeover to become a golf superstar in order to save his grandmother's house from foreclosure.
Sandler's adversary in the original film, Shooter McGavin, portrayed by Christopher McDonald, hinted at the sequel in March, telling "Audacy's 92.3 The Fan" radio show, "It's in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!" He also expressed his delight when he read the first draft that Sandler sent him.
In the original cast, Julie Bowen, Frances Bay, and Kevin Nealon co-starred with the duo, as well as Carl Weathers, who played Derick "Chubbs" Peterson, a retired pro who becomes Gilmore's mentor. Weathers, who passed away in February at the age of 76, was praised by Sandler in a tribute post on Instagram as "a true great man."
"Great dad. Great actor. Great athlete," Sandler, 57, wrote. "So much fun to be around ... Carl will always be known as a true legend."
"Happy Gilmore" is one of Sandler's most memorable roles and has been cherished by golf enthusiasts as well as professional golfers. The film has inspired numerous emulations of Gilmore's unconventional swing technique, along with a real-life golfing namesake.
"It's fascinating that there are so many non-golfers who recognize the 'Happy Gilmore swing' or have watched the movie," Ladies European Tour winner Amy Boulden said in an interview with CNN's Living Golf in 2021. "I think it's fantastic that it's attracted so many people from outside of golf's sphere. They have watched the movie and then taken a shot at replicating that iconic swing at the driving range."
