Biathlon - Nawrath wins in Östersund - Rees loses yellow jersey

Philipp Nawrath has given the German biathlon men their second victory in the second individual race of the winter.

The 30-year-old Bavarian won the sprint in Östersund without any shooting errors and was unbeatable in temperatures of 15 degrees below zero. Behind Nawrath, who surprisingly celebrated his first World Cup victory, the Norwegians Tarjei Bö and Vebjörn Sörum finished second and third over ten kilometers, also without any misses.

Nawrath's team-mate Roman Rees, on the other hand, lost the lead in the overall World Cup standings. The 30-year-old was competing in the yellow jersey for the first time in his career, but was unable to build on this performance six days after his opening victory over 20 kilometers. "The power wasn't there at the end. I had an unusually poor standing shooting," said Rees, who missed out on the top 50 after three penalty loops. The second best German was Johannes Kühn (1 penalty) in eighth place, Benedikt Doll (1) finished tenth.

The first pursuit races of the winter are on the program for the World Cup finale on Sunday (from 14:00/ZDF and Eurosport). Franziska Preuß will be wearing the yellow jersey for the first time in the women's race. She secured the coveted piece of clothing by finishing fourth in the sprint. Norway's Karoline Offigstad Knotten will also start in yellow, as both are tied for the lead in points and results after two races.
