Biathlon - Nawrath in the yellow jersey: "Excited to see how it suits me"

After the first World Cup victory of his career, biathlete Philipp Nawrath is looking forward to his unexpected premiere as overall World Cup leader. "It's amazing that it worked out with the yellow jersey. I'm looking forward to seeing how it suits me," the 30-year-old told the German Press Agency in Östersund.

With his sprint success, the Bavarian chased the coveted jersey from his team-mate Roman Rees on Saturday in Sweden. He will wear it for the first time this Sunday (16:00/ZDF and Eurosport) in the pursuit.

"This is the first time I've ever been in this position. I've only experienced this in smaller races so far, it will be completely new in the World Cup," said Nawrath about his new role as the hunted. The Bavarian will be 19 seconds ahead of former champion Tarjei Bö from Norway. Nawrath does not feel any pressure after fulfilling a dream. For the first time, the ski hunter from SK Nesselwang made it onto the World Cup podium on his own. On Thursday, he had already been part of the men's relay team that finished third.

DSV with a good start to the season

The German season has got off to a fantastic start. Three starters from the German Ski Association are at the top of the overall standings in the men's event: Nawrath (102 points) leads ahead of Justus Strelow (101) and Roman Rees (90). And Franziska Preuß, a German in yellow, will also be competing in the women's race on Sunday. "The fact that we are now right at the front is testament to a really good team performance. We have created the perfect basic conditions," said Nawrath. The ski technicians in particular are doing an outstanding job following the new fluorine ban and have delivered perfect boards so far.

But the individual performances also match this. First, Rees triumphed in the singles last Sunday. Now Nawrath achieved the rare feat of not making any mistakes in the sprint. He recently checked with a close friend how often he manages to finish a race and hit all the targets. "I have to look back a long time and on average I only manage that every three years. That's not really a hit," he said: "When it does work out and everything goes right, you're all the more delighted."
