Nagelsmann's stadium visit with girlfriend divides experts

The DFB Cup match between VfB Stuttgart and BVB is enough to talk about. About the miraculously strong VfB and the miraculously weak BVB. But a big topic will be the appearance of national coach Julian Nagelsmann, who is bringing his girlfriend to the stadium.

Julian Nagelsmann remains the topic of conversation in German soccer. But not because he has tried any experiments with the national team or suffered a bitter defeat. This time, his visit to the cup match between the strong VfB Stuttgart and the not-so-strong BVB is causing quite a stir. And once again it is the country's most powerful pundit who is outraged and initiates a new debate. After all, we don't want it to be boring until we get back on the pitch in the new year.

What happened? Nagelsmann was a guest at the MHP Arena - as the stadium in Stuttgart is now called - and not alone. His girlfriend Lena Wurzenberger was sitting by his side. So far, so, well, good? Rather not. Renowned soccer expert Dietmar Hamann, who is not always a popular figure, was stunned by the images from the stands. The expert titan scolded "Bild", for which Wurzenberger once worked as a Bayern reporter: "When I saw that, I thought to myself: That can't be true. The national team is up to its neck in water and the national coach is taking a family trip to Stuttgart with the motto: It'll be fine."

"It's hard to beat ignorance"

And once in his infamous rage, he went on to rant: "For me, this is unprofessional, incomprehensible and hard to beat in terms of ignorance." So, Germany has another national coach discussion. And yet it had only just died down a little. The crisis team is on the way to a quiet period of reorientation and self-discovery before things really heat up in March, when the big form and mood check for the home European Championship will take place in the planned test matches against France and the Netherlands. Not only will the DFB team be changed in terms of content, but new personnel will also be brought in.

Possibly also from the surprise team VfB Stuttgart, which Nagelsmann apparently wanted to inspect more closely in the DFB Cup against the rattling giant BVB. With Alexander Nübel, Waldemar Anton, Maxi Mittelstädt, Chris Führich and Deniz Undav, there are numerous protagonists for problematic positions such as central defense (Anton), full-back (Mittelstädt) and the center of attack. Potential candidate and goalscorer Undav, for example, has indicated that he is keen to play for the national team after talking to the national coach.

Rudi Völler likes that (a little)

But back to Nagelsmann and Hamann. Not every pundit wanted to get as worked up as the man who usually drives the country's coaches crazy with his hard-hitting assessments on Sky. Meanwhile, Lothar Matthäus, also a leading voice of critical soccer minds, appealed for leniency in his judgment of Nagelsmann's performance: "You have to leave that up to everyone. Julian is watching a game with his girlfriend - I don't see anything critical about it." He was fully in line with DFB director Rudi Völler, who also told Bild: "If this is really what's shaking the soccer world, then things don't look too bad for us." Well, this assessment is a little far-fetched, but well, it's supposed to be a summer fairytale.

Everything said now? No, the eternal Marcel Reif, the current "Bild" pundit, has placed himself somewhere between the "Hau-drauf-Hamann" and "Milde-Matthäus": "If he was the club coach and his girlfriend was sitting on the bench next to him, I would say: maybe not the best idea. But like this ... As an adult, you still ask yourself: what could possibly be problematic about that?" He himself also liked to take his wife on Champions League trips, which is a strange comparison. But it was like this: "Did I put her next to me in the commentator's seat? Not so much. That's something you think about. I admit: In the back of my mind, I thought: Would you have done it as Nagelsmann? [...] Probably not!" Merry Christmas!

Despite the ongoing national coach discussion, Julian Nagelsmann's appearance at the VfB Stuttgart vs BVB DFB Cup match with his girlfriend Lena Wurzenberger has once again sparked controversy. This time, renowned soccer expert Dietmar Hamann expressed his disapproval, calling it unprofessional and hard to beat in terms of ignorance. Despite Hamann's criticism, other notable figures such as Lothar Matthäus and Rudi Völler have defended Nagelsmann, with Matthäus stating that everyone should be left to decide how they spend their time.
