Nagelsmann surprises with three changes to the starting eleven
For the first time at this European Football Championship, national team coach Julian Nagelsmann makes changes to his starting line-up. Against Denmark, Florian Wirtz and Maximilian Mittelstadt will have to sit on the bench. David Raum and Leroy Sané will get the same opportunity as the scorer against Switzerland, David Raum.
National team coach Julian Nagelsmann makes three surprising changes in the German team's starting formation for the European Championship quarter-final against Denmark. In addition to Nico Schlotterbeck, who replaces the suspended Jonathan Tah in defense, David Raum and Leroy Sané are new additions to the squad.
Defensive leader Antonio Rüdiger has recovered in time from his strain suffered in the game against Switzerland and can defend alongside Schlotterbeck. Niclas Füllkrug, the goalscorer, sits on the bench for the fourth time in the tournament as a backup. Kai Havertz starts in the striker position as in the group stage. Leipzig's Raum starts on the left for Maximilian Mittelstadt. Bayern Munich's Sané replaces Florian Wirtz in the offensive line.
"The players who come in have earned it through a good training week," Nagelsmann said before the kick-off on MagentaTV. "They are all for-decisions, not against. These are two world-class players. Today we have decided on Leroy." Wirtz and Mittelstadt are "naturally" disappointed that they are not starting from the beginning, "just like Füllkrug. But they have taken it well."
Nagelsmann gave the following marching orders: "We want to act defensively as well as offensively. Of course, you can't always run around with an open target on your back, but we won't park the bus." The national team coach sees a "good chance" for a semi-final berth. "Every chance in life has an expiration date. Today's expiration date is tonight," he said.

Besides Nico Schlotterbeck replacing the suspended Jonathan Tah, Bayern Munich's Leroy Sané also joined the starting line-up, replacing Florian Wirtz.
