Nagelsmann is receiving a substitution, while Sané and Rüdiger will be absent from home
Following the European Championship, four notable footballers are stepping down from the national team. Notably, there aren't any significant team changes announced yet. For the approaching Nations League matches against Hungary and the Netherlands, only one fresh face has been included in the squad by coach Julian Nagelsmann. A couple of prominent players are taking a break.
Angleo Stiller is the lone new addition to Nagelsmann's first squad after the home European Championship. The midfielder from VfB Stuttgart was selected for the Nations League encounters with Hungary (7th September, Düsseldorf) and the Netherlands (10th September, Amsterdam). The captaincy issue remains unresolved by Nagelsmann, with Joshua Kimmich seemingly leading the race. Nagelsmann is anticipated to reveal his decision on this matter on Monday, once the team gathers in Herzogenaurach.
In the wake of Toni Kroos and team captain Ilkay Gündogan's retirements, Nagelsmann acknowledged the requirement to "substitute two midfield players." The coach commended Stiller for his "impressive performances" in both this and the previous season. Overall, Nagelsmann opted against extensive team modifications, stating, "We're content with how each player performed during the European Championship and believe it's wise to maintain stability for now."
Stiller, reciprocating the praise, expressed his excitement, acknowledging "every player dreams of representing their national team. I've had the honor of playing for various youth teams within the DFB, but being called up to the senior squad is an exceptional opportunity."
However, defender Antonio Rüdiger is unavailable due to a regenerative break. Leroy Sané, meanwhile, is also resting, having undergone groin surgery recently in order to avoid overexertion. Serge Gnabry, despite his impressive early-season form, was not reinstated to the national team. Returning to the roster are Alexander Nübel (Stuttgart) and Aleksandar Pavlović (Bayern Munich), who missed the European Championship due to illness. Marc-André ter Stegen is expected to replace Manuel Neuer as the new primary goalkeeper.
The German national team will participate in six international fixtures this year, all within the framework of the Nations League. Until November, they'll face Hungary, the Netherlands, and Bosnia and Herzegovina twice each. As of now, about 43,000 tickets for the Hungary match have been sold out of the available 49,235.
Joshua Kimmich remains a strong contender for the team captaincy, with Nagelsmann expected to announce his decision on Monday. Despite Serge Gnabry's impressive early-season form, he was not reinstated to the national team for the upcoming Nations League matches.
