Team representing the country - Nagelsmann finalizes team selection.
Julian Nagelsmann has made the call on the player who will not be included in his final Euro 2024 squad.
The player who won't be part of the national team for the home Euros will be revealed by the coach on Friday evening after the last friendly game against Greece (8:45 pm/RTL). The player is still in the dark about the decision, Nagelsmann said during the press conference in Mönchengladbach.
"The decision has been made. We will announce it after the match," said Nagelsmann. He had considered "various options" with his coaching staff, the national coach reported. The outcome of the match against Greece won't impact the selection, except if a player sustains a severe injury.
Koch and Beier were the final candidates for the cut.
Nagelsmann can name 26 players for the tournament team. He had initially called up 27 players for the preparation. As candidates for the cut, Maximilian Beier from TSG Hoffenheim and Robin Koch from Eintracht Frankfurt were considered. Nagelsmann emphasized that no player deserved to be left out.
The team list needs to be submitted to UEFA by midnight on Friday. Only a player exchange is possible until the first game against Scotland on June 14 in Munich if a UEFA doctor confirms an injury that makes a Euro appearance impossible.
Kai Havertz will once again be favored as the striker over Niclas Füllkrug for the match against Greece, as stated by Nagelsmann. "If Kai puts on a show, he has a slight edge," he added. Toni Kroos and Antonio Rüdiger, who missed the friendly game against Ukraine (0:0) on Monday after winning the Champions League with Real Madrid, are also in the starting lineup. Leroy Sané is a potential starter, said Nagelsmann, despite his ongoing thigh issue.
