Nagelsmann exempts one goalkeeper from the European Championship team after consideration.
The DFB has announced its final squad for the European Championship, and the surprising cut is goalkeeper Alexander Nübel. This runs contrary to coach Julian Nagelsmann's previous statement about wanting four goalkeepers in the tournament.
One player will regret watching the European Championship from home as goalkeeper Alexander Nübel will reportedly not be making the cut according to RTL/ntv news. Nagelsmann had previously mentioned that he preferred to have four goalkeepers in the tournament, but the DFB has remained silent about the topic.
A hint at the decision was provided by a UEFA-published matchday squad for the last EM test match against Greece (8:45 p.m. on RTL and live ticker on ntv.de). In this Mönchengladbach match, Nübel isn't included in the 26-player list of the umbrella organization. Nagelsmann must submit the final 26-player squad for the tournament by June 14th to UEFA. Out of the 27-player provisional squad, he still needs to cut one professional.
The team has learned of the cut candidate, as Nagelsmann announced on Thursday evening that the decision regarding his final EM squad was already made. He initially intended to announce who was being cut after the match against Greece. According to reports, Nübel is currently on standby.
Newcomer Nübel of VfB Stuttgart was prepared for this possibility. "It could very well happen," the goalkeeper told t-online. He added, "more adjustments are made with field players during a tournament than in the goal position. Maybe Julian decided that he just needs three goalkeepers to have greater control of the field." Nübel will keep trying until the last minute but admits, "I can't do more."
Nagelsmann had earlier indicated he would stick to four goalkeepers including Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich), Marc-André ter Stegen (Barcelona), Oliver Baumann (Hoffenheim), and Nübel. However, the team selection has now changed.

Despite his inclusion in Nagelsmann's initial 27-player provisional squad, Alexander Nübel of VfB Stuttgart will not be part of Germany's national soccer team at the European Football Championship 2024. This decision comes after the DFB announced their final squad and the surprising omission of the goalkeeper. Despite Julian Nagelsmann's earlier preference for four goalkeepers in the tournament, the team will only include three, with Manuel Neuer, Marc-André ter Stegen, and Oliver Baumann likely to be included. Nagelsmann must submit the final 26-player squad to UEFA by June 14th, and Nübel remains on standby.
