Musiala's Refreshed European Championship Position: "Not Just an Ordinary Young Athlete Anymore"

At just 21 years old, Jamal Musiala has already participated in three significant tournaments, including the Euro Championships. Known as "Bambi" earlier, the young FC Bayern standout has evolved into a consistent performer with defined objectives.

Before the beginning of the home Euro Championships, Bayern Munich's promising youngster Jamal Musiala reflects on his remarkable progress in the German national team with a sense of accomplishment. "I'm not just a typical young player anymore," the 21-year-old attacking player told the German Press Agency.

Soon to participate in his third tournament as a national player, Musiala was the up-and-coming rookie at the last European Championship in 2021, turning 18 years old during the event and even earning the nickname "Bambi" at the Adidas "Home Ground" in Herzogenaurach, the same location where the DFB team is living and training this time. "There have been significant changes in the last three years," said Musiala.

"I'm a regular starter now"

Now, Musiala is a sure bet in Hansi Flick's plans for the opening game on Friday (9 p.m./ZDF and MagentaTV) against Scotland, appearing on the coach's wish list and a promising candidate for the offense. "I'm playing more frequently," he declared confidently. "I've improved my game immensely."

Stemming from his debut as a substitute in the 2:2 draw against Hungary in the 82nd minute in 2019, Musiala was immediately involved in a goal created by Leon Goretzka upon his entrance. The 2021 Euros saw Musiala playing sparingly, but his presence in the squad was still an honor. "I didn't get as many minutes at the 2021 Euros. Just being there was already a major accomplishment," he reminisced.

Still lacking a goal in his German jersey

Musiala then participated in all three group stage matches against Japan (1:2), Spain (1:1), and Costa Rica (4:2) during his first World Cup in Qatar under Joachim Löw's replacement, Hansi Flick. The young star was active with his dribbling, yet remained inactive in the scoring department. He's hoping to improve this aspect of his performances at his third tournament. 29 international appearances, only two goals - the result does not reflect the talent and dedication exhibited by the highly skilled player.

Musiala dreams of playing a larger role in the team with goals and assists. "I now have more responsibility, which was my goal," he said. "It also means more pressure. And that's what I want as the player I aspire to be."

From "Bambi" to a star in the making.
