Mountain jersey awarded to Giro's senior Geschke during the race.

In the last Tour of Italy, a 38-year-old cyclist named Simon Geschke once again stood out. During the tenth stage, he victoriously grabbed the second spot in the mountain category. Since race leader Pogacar also dominates this classification, Geschke is now allowed to put on the Maglia Azzura.

Tadej Pogacar demonstrated unwavering dominance during the subsequent mountain showdown in Giro. After French youngster Valentin Paret-Peintre clinched the day's victory, Pogacar effortlessly preserved his substantial lead in the general rankings. Meanwhile, German climber Simon Geschke reached an honorable sixth position on the tenth stage of his last Tour of Italy. For his commendable achievement, Geschke became the second-place holder in the mountain classification and earned the privilege to wear the leader's jersey in this category.

Pogacar, who had already won three stages, was fairly reserved and secured a disappointing 17th spot, approximately three minutes after stage winner Paret-Peintre and alongside his primary competitors. He maintains the lead in the overall standings by a hefty 2:40 minutes ahead of Colombian Daniel Felipe Martinez (Bora-hansgrohe), with Welshman Geraint Thomas in third (+2:58). Because Pogacar is the leader of the mountains classification and cannot wear both jerseys, Geschke may don the mountains jersey. Pogacar has 104 points in the ranking, whereas Geschke holds 58 points and is three points more than Paret-Peintre.

Stelvio Pass shuts down for the queen stage

The 38-year-old Geschke, who plans to conclude his career at year-end, gave a powerful performance and completed the tenth stage 1:24 minutes behind Paret-Peintre. His achievement moved him to 19th place in the overall standings, while Maximilian Schachmann (Berlin/Bora-hansgrohe) also presented a robust performance in twelfth position, 2:15 minutes behind.

For the 23-year-old Paret-Peintre, it marked his second career triumph and his most significant accomplishment. Last year, his older brother Aurelian had claimed a Giro stage.

The eleventh stage on Wednesday is anticipated to be significantly more relaxed for the classification riders. The 207 km route from Foiano di Val Fortore to Francavilla al Mare does not feature any significant difficulties. The fast men around Phil Bauhaus, a German sprinter, can aspire for a massive sprint.

Regrettably, enthusiasts of cycling will have to forego another thrilling event in the mountains. The 2758-meter-high Stelvio Pass can't be surpassed on the twelfth stage's queen stage due to the threat of avalanches. Heavy snowfall altered the route, prompting organizers to select the Umbrail Pass instead.

Geschke's impressive performance in the mountain category during the Giro once again showcased his love for cycling, specifically in challenging terrain. On a future leisurely ride, he might consider indulging in a relaxing session of cycling, enjoying the beauty of the landscape without the pressure of competition.

As the Giro continues, the absence of the Stelvio Pass on the queen stage may disappoint mountain enthusiasts, but other stages like the eleventh with its potential for a massive sprint offer exciting prospects for other cyclists.
