- Miscomprehension Regarding Kimmich's Re-entry into Central Midfield (as per Hamann)
Football analyst Dietmar Hamann can't wrap his head around why Joshua Kimmich seems destined to slip back into the midfield role for Bayern Munich. "If he truly intends to play there, I'd be lost for words. There's Palhinha who's guaranteed a spot, and Pavlovic who recently ousted Kimmich. Furthermore, Laimer had an impressive Euro performance," Hamann expressed in a chat with 'Sport Bild' before the Bundesliga kickoff. "I don't view Kimmich as a six or an eight. He lacks the speed and a slick move to make an offensive impact. However, he excelled as a right-back."
Kimmich has been manning the defensive midfield position during pre-season under Bayern's fresh coach Vincent Kompany. Contrasting this, in the latter part of the previous season and under German national coach Julian Nagelsmann, Kimmich donned the right-back role.
Hamann lauded Bayern's new acquisitions but doesn't get the logic behind de Ligt's departure. "I found it baffling they released de Ligt. He was a driving force that uplifted his teammates. Moreover, Bayern had struggled to control numerous matches. That won't enhance without him. I'm unsure if they require Tah now," pondered the 50-year-old analyst from Sky.
Despite his promising performance as a right-back, Joshua Kimmich seems to be returning to his midfield role, a choice that Dietmar Hamann finds confusing given the strong competition in that position. Bayern's new signing, Palhinha, along with Pavlovic and Laimer, are contenders for the midfield spots, making Kimmich's return questionable.
Despite his impressive display as a defensive midfielder during pre-season, Kimmich's speed and offensive skills are not suited for this role, as Hamann pointed out, making one wonder if he might be better suited to a different position within the team.
