Mini SUV offering ample space but with a few drawbacks: Opel Crossland

The Opel Crossland, previously known as the Crossland X until a 2021 facelift, is a small SUV that provides plenty of room without taking up too much space. However, there might be some hidden issues you should be aware of before purchasing one.

The Opel Crossland made its debut in mid-2017 and is based on the same platform as the Peugeot 2008 and Citroen C3 Aircross.

Quality

During safety inspections, also known as TÜV main inspections (HU), the Crossland X reveals both strong points and areas in need of improvement. The axle springs, brake discs, and oil loss were some concerns raised by TÜV inspectors. Potential buyers should pay close attention to these areas. The axle suspension, steering, lighting, and exhaust system received no notable comments.

At first glance, the Crossland X is recognizable as a member of the Opel family.

Appearance and Interior

The Crossland X measures in at 4.21 meters long and resembles other Opel family members thanks to its distinct creases. The plastic side panels around the wheel arches and front and rear underride protection only serve aesthetics; the crossover comes only with front-wheel drive. Opel's unique style can be seen inside the cabin as well. The steering wheel, dashboard, and shifter are reminiscent of many other models. The facelift models can be distinguished by the missing X in the model name and a modified front design featuring a Vizor face.

The Crossland X features a spacious interior with a wheelbase of 2.6 meters. The three-section rear bench seat can slide up to 15 centimeters, and depending on its position, the trunk can hold between 410 and 520 liters. The maximum capacity is 1255 liters.

Engines and Transmission

The Crossland X has had various engine options, such as a 1.2-liter naturally aspirated three-cylinder engine with 60 kW/83 hp (until mid-2022) and a 1.2-liter turbocharged version with either 81 kW/110 hp or 96 kW/130 hp. The range initially included a 1.6-liter diesel with 73 kW/99 PS and 88 kW/122 PS, which was then replaced with a 1.5-liter diesel with 81 kW/110 PS and 122 PS (until mid-2020).

Average fuel consumption for petrol engines ranges from 4.7 to 5.2 liters, while diesel engines consume between 3.5 and 5.5 liters. An LPG alternative was also available with the 1.2-liter naturally aspirated engine between the end of 2017 and mid-2018. The transmission options include a manual five- or six-speed gearbox or a six-speed automatic transmission, depending on the engine.

The Opel Crossland X shows good and less good sides at the TÜV.

Equipment and SafetyPriced around 17,000 euros at its initial launch, the Crossland X comes with a basic set of features in the "Selection" trim. If you want more visual appeal, like roof rails or two-tone paint, or increased comfort, like automatic climate control, sports seats, or advanced infotainment systems, consider the "Edition," "Innovation, "Ultimate," and, since 2021, "GS-Line" equipment levels. These packages include various comfort and convenience features such as a head-up display, navigation system, or a 180-degree panoramic reversing camera.

Conclusion

The Opel Crossland X stands out for its generous interior space and adjustable trunk. If you're shopping for a used model, make sure it has a fresh safety inspection sticker. More than 5,000 used Crossland models are currently listed on mobile.de, with prices starting around 7,000 euros.

With the facelift, Opel removed the X from the model designation.
