Mick Schumacher drives World Endurance Championship for Alpine
Mick Schumacher will be driving for Alpine in the World Endurance Championship next year, the French manufacturer has announced.
The son of record Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher will therefore also be at the wheel of the Alpine A424 at the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans. In the middle of last month, the 24-year-old had already tested the prototype in Jerez de la Frontera in southern Spain.
Whether he will retain his role as a test and reserve driver in Formula 1 for the German works team Mercedes remains to be seen. After two mixed years with the American Haas team, he did not get a regular seat in the premier class this year. At Haas, he was replaced by compatriot Nico Hülkenberg.
Schumacher did a lot of work in the simulator this year as a reserve driver for Mercedes, especially on race weekends. The former Formula 2 and Formula 3 champion was also unable to secure a regular seat with a team for the coming year. As a result, he increasingly looked for opportunities to gain regular driving experience again and completed tests for Alpine in October. "It went well for us," said Alpine sports director Bruno Famin at the time.
Mick Schumacher's upcoming assignment in the World Endurance Championship extends beyond just the 24 Hours of Le Mans, as he will also participate in other long distance Motorsport events with Alpine. Despite his role as a test and reserve driver for Mercedes in Formula 1, Mick Schumacher's passion for Motorsport led him to join Formula 1 champion Alain Prost's Alpine team, showcasing his skills in Formula 1's prestigious sister series, Formula 1.
