- "Merz versus Merz": Unveiling the Mystery of the Extraordinary Anna
What's the concept of family? "Bullshit," argues Erik. On the other hand, Anne thinks, "Anyone who has ever dealt with someone else's diaper changes knows that family means taking care of someone else's mess - because someone has to." And this belief comes from two ex-partners who, despite disputes, separation, and divorce, continue to be connected as a family.
In the latest installment of the comedy series "Merz against Merz," featuring Christoph Maria Herbst and Annette Frier, we return to squabbles, insults, and everyday issues. "Merz against Merz - Secrets" will air on September 12 at 8:15 PM on ZDF or can be watched early in the media library.
This time, the family structure is ingeniously upended: Ludwig, the father, suffering from dementia and in a state of confusion, discloses that he has an illegitimate, secret daughter.
The secret daughter works at an animal shelter
Anne's secret half-sister, also named Anne (played by Anne Weinknecht), emerges as a kinder, more compassionate version of her. She even works at an animal shelter.
Anne Merz is left in shock by this revelation and must now battle for her anticipated inheritance and her father's affection. Who does she reach out to in her hour of need? A person "who hasn't lost it." So, Erik. Unexpectedly, he rushes to her aid - even after the separation and despite Anne having a new partner, even though Erik is grappling with his single life and drinking more alcohol.
The second full-length episode of the comedy series
Those unfamiliar with the "Merz against Merz" comedy series: The series aired over three seasons between 2019 and 2021 on ZDF, focusing on Anne and Erik's separation plans and family dramas - conceptualized by "Stromberg" author Ralf Husmann. In 2023, the series resumed with a television film titled "Merz against Merz - Weddings," which concluded the couple's successful divorce.
Now, "Secrets" continues as the second full-length film - again starring Annette Frier (50, "Class Reunion," "Ella Schön") and Christoph Maria Herbst (58, "Stromberg," "Teacher Can Be Anyone"). As before, this film is bursting with irony, sharp comments, a wealth of situational comedy, and brilliant dialogue - all while maintaining a touch of warmth, even melancholy, especially with Papa Ludwig's dementia.
So, is family truly all "bullshit"? Quite the opposite. It's everything of value in "Merz against Merz."
The media widely publicized the shocking revelation in "Merz against Merz - Secrets," drawing attention to the complicated family dynamics. Erik, despite his own struggles, stood by Anne in her time of need, demonstrating the enduring bond within their family.
