Championships for European Athletes - Men's 4x400 relay team secures third place; Kolberg finishes in fifth position.
A team of German male runners nabbed the bronze medal at the European Athletics Championships in Rome. Just a hair faster were the Italians and these athletes missed out on the silver by a mere hundredth of a second. Their time: 3:00.82 minutes. Coming in first, the Belgian crew finished at 2:59.84.
The German ladies' 4x400-meter relay group, featuring Skadi Schier, Alica Schmidt, Luna Bulmahn, and Eileen Demes, placed 8th with a time of 3:27.11 minutes. A bit quicker was the Dutch squad with Femke Bol, the 800 meters European Championship winner, who had a time of 3:22.39 minutes. Unlike their fallen and burned counterparts, this crew can still harbor hopes of qualifying for the Paris Olympics.
Majtie Kolberg, a 24-year-old 800-meter runner from LG Kreis Ahrweiler, ended up at seventh place. Despite her admirable time of 1:59.87 minutes, a medal wasn't in her immediate future, unlike the British defending champ Keely Hodgkinson who crossed the finish line at 1:58.65 minutes.
