Matthäus defends Nagelsmann

They also saw that national coach Julian Nagelsmann (36) was among the 54,200 spectators doing his job during the national team crisis: watching the players. Surprisingly by his side in the stands: girlfriend Lena (31)! Such joint appearances had never been seen before from national team coaches.

With girlfriend at work - Matthäus defends Nagelsmann

5.6 million TV viewers watched BVB's cup defeat in Stuttgart (0:2) on ARD on Wednesday.

However, the DFB said that it was not a novelty for a national coach to watch a match in the stands next to his partner, e.g. Flick with his wife Silke at a Leverkusen Europa League match in Rome.

Jürgen Klinsmann (59, 2004 to 2006) and Jogi Löw (63, 2006 to 2021) only appeared in the stands with their wives after the end of their time as national team coaches. Although they had their partners in the stadium with them from time to time, they did not sit next to them.

A national team coach who brings his partner to work with him - is that okay or not?

Lothar Matthäus (62): "That's up to you. Julian is watching a game with his girlfriend - I don't see anything critical about that."

Dietmar Hamann (50): "When I saw that, I thought to myself: That can't be true. The national team is up to its neck in water and the national coach is taking a family trip to Stuttgart with the motto: It'll be fine. For me, that's unprofessional, incomprehensible and hard to beat in terms of ignorance."

Marcel Reif (74): "If he was a club coach and his girlfriend was sitting on the bench next to him, I would say: maybe not the best idea. But like this ... As an adult, you still ask yourself: what could possibly be problematic about this? I also liked to take my wife on Champions League trips. Did I put her next to me in the commentator's seat? Not so much. It's something you think about. I admit: at the back of my mind I was thinking: would you have done it as Nagelsmann? The Swiss says: Eener nöd! Probably not!"

Nagelsmann has won one of four games as national coach (3:1 at the USA), most recently losing against Turkey (2:3) and in Austria (0:2).
