Matthäus and Babbel see little need for Kroos to return

Will Toni Kroos play for Germany again at the European Championship? There has been speculation about this for days. However, two former national team players think it's a less good idea.

National team - Matthäus and Babbel see little need for Kroos to return

Former national team players Lothar Matthäus and Markus Babbel are rather critical of Toni Kroos ' possible return to the national team.

"If Kroos could play full-back - okay. But the German team has the least need in midfield. So you're opening up a can of worms that you don't need," Matthäus wrote in his column for pay-TV channel Sky: "Kroos isn't a clearer in front of the defense either, but if Nagelsmann suddenly sees Kroos as the holding six, there will be a lot of discussions again."

Babbel also has doubts

Babbel sees it exactly the same way. Kroos is "a gifted footballer, but is he also the savior? I have my doubts about that," said the 1996 European champion on the "ran Bundesliga Webshow": "He's not a vacuum cleaner who can stomp everyone away. Above all, you need a six-man who's not too shy to take those dirty routes and fight those duels."

Kroos (33) would need people around him who are stronger defensively if he were to return to the DFB team. "If you can't find a partner for him, you won't get a handle on the defensive problems. If I were Toni Kroos, I'd do without shame and stay at home in Madrid," said Babbel: "But if you find the right mix, Toni can do great things."

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann recently described a Kroos return as an "interesting thought" in the ZDF sports studio and added: "You have to think about all players who have a German passport, I think that's my job." However, Nagelsmann revealed that he had not yet spoken to the 2014 world champion about the matter. The Real Madrid midfielder ended his career in the DFB squad after 106 caps following the 2021 European Championship.

Toni Kroos, a prominent figure in the German national soccer team, has been criticized by former players Lothar Matthäus and Markus Babbel for potential returns to the team. Matthäus suggests that Kroos could play as a full-back, but the German team doesn't need reinforcements in midfield. Babbel shares similar sentiments, expressing doubts about Kroos as the team's savior, considering his defense skills. If Kroos were to return, he would need strong defensive partners to address the team's defensive problems. Julian Nagelsmann, the current Germany coach, has suggested the idea of Kroos' return as an interesting thought, acknowledging that he must consider all players with German citizenship. However, Nagelsmann has yet to discuss this possibility with Kroos. In the past, Kroos ended his DFB squad career following the 2021 European Championship with 106 caps.
