On a surprising Thursday, news agencies received word that Edin Terzic had requested the termination of his contract at Borussia Dortmund, and the club had granted his wish. Led by Terzic, Dortmund had reached the Champions League final, yet their league and cup performances fell short of expectations.
Rumors had been circulating for weeks about the strained relationship between Terzic and the players. Last week, "Bild" shared a story of an altercation between Terzic and Mats Hummels before the final in Wembley, and the rapport with club icon Marco Reus was far from perfect. Hummels subsequently spoke to "Sport Bild," criticizing Terzic's strategies, just prior to the separation in London at the end of May. The following day, Hummels uploaded a cryptic message to Instagram, "Today will be a challenge for me to summarize," accompanied by a startled photo.
Hummels' Interview: A Cause for Separation
For the 2014 World Cup winner Hummels, it appears his time at Dortmund comes to an end following the split with Terzic. Media has persistently reported that Borussia Dortmund shows no intention to extend Hummels' contract, set to expire in June. The apparent reason for this decision is Hummels' controversial interview with "Sport Bild", which reportedly did not sit well with the club leadership. With 13 years, two league titles, and two cup wins to his name, Hummels will be forced to find a new club.
For now, it seems Borussia Dortmund has set its sights on finding a new coach from within their own ranks. According to "Sportschau", Nuri Sahin will step aside. Sahin, who spent time at Dortmund from 2001 to 2011 and from 2013 to 2018, and returned to the club last year after his playing days ended, was promoted alongside Sven Bender as Terzic's assistant. This move had been interpreted as a sign of no faith in Terzic by the club management.
