Mathys Tel is engaging in internal conflict at FC Bayern, with the number zero representing his current struggle.
At the offensive front with striker Harry Kane, Bayern has its fair share of winners and underperformers. Mathys Tel, the third-year Frenchman, had anticipated a more prominent role and netted goals in the early stages of his Munich stint. Regrettably, the fan favorite hasn't managed to carry his promising preseason form into the current season, as he yet to find the back of the net before the weekend's Bundesliga encounter against SV Werder Bremen (15:30 CET/Sky and ntv.de liveticker).
Manager Vincent Kompany and the Bayern hierarchy remain optimistic. In the grand scheme of things, Sporting Director Christoph Freund emphasized: "Mathys is not an issue that will warrant a loan." Kompany underscored: "I too was once a young player. It's completely standard to undergo fluctuations. He just needs to keep going. We have faith in him." Freund added that Tel demonstrated his potential during pre-season trials. The young Frenchman is also consistently self-critical and makes an effort to improve every day. "It's only a matter of time before he finds the net again and rediscovers his confidence," the sporting director concluded.
The Olympics gave Olise a leg up
Coincidentally, Tel's countryman Olise, acquired for €53 million from Crystal Palace, is making his mark with exceptional performances in his new environment. The 22-year-old has already scored once in the Bundesliga and doubled his tally in his Champions League debut against Dinamo Zagreb.
"He's already playing a key role and will continue to do so," Kompany commended. It turns out that Olise's participation in the Olympics football tournament in Paris, where he earned a silver medal as an offensive player with France, was a blessing in disguise.
"He returned to us in excellent shape," Kompany admitted, although Olise commenced preseason training in Munich later than Tel. "Michael has played remarkably well at the Olympics," Freund acknowledged: "There's a whole new world for him, with numerous distractions as well in his national team. We're extremely satisfied with how things have progressed for Michael."
FC Bayern Munich's manager Vincent Kompany and the club's hierarchy remain hopeful about Mathys Tel's performance, despite his current scoring drought. Kompany, drawing from his own experience as a young player, believes Tel will overcome his slump and find his form again. On the other hand, Olise, another Frenchman acquired by Bayern, has been impressing with his performances, having scored once in the Bundesliga and doubling his tally in his Champions League debut.
