Match between Rostock and Schalke interrupted for a long time
Nothing happens for more than 25 minutes in the match between FC Hansa Rostock and FC Schalke 04: The players sit in the dressing room, the game is interrupted. This was caused by rioting in the stands. Immediately after the restart, a red card is given for an action before the forced break.
The second division basement duel between FC Hansa Rostock and FC Schalke 04 was actually about three important points in the fight against relegation. However, after just under 40 minutes of play, referee Nicolas Winter ordered the two teams into the dressing rooms. No goals had been scored by then, a result that would not help either club if it lasted until the final whistle. However, this final whistle is already looming at this early stage, as a stoppage is apparently on the cards. This was apparently triggered by escalating abuse between the fan groups. After just four minutes, the referee interrupted the match for almost two minutes due to pyrotechnics being set off.
Pictures from the stadium show that some people from the Schalke away block had broken through a barrier and forced their way into an empty section of the Ostseestadion. This was supposed to provide distance, but threatened to become an escalation zone. Stewards and police prevented the clash. According to the Rostock police, Schalke fans had previously set off pyrotechnics. The officers only managed to calm the situation down after several minutes. The Rostock fans also forced their way into the area.
The pitch then remained empty for almost 25 minutes before the teams returned and prepared for the restart with a short warm-up program. The restart then took a strange turn: Referee Winter, in conjunction with the video assistant, took a closer look at a second challenge by Rostock's Junior Brumado. Immediately before the break, he had caught Schalke's Blendi Idrizi in the face with his elbow and was shown a yellow card. After a thorough examination, Winter revised his decision - and showed a straight red. According to the pictures, an absolutely justifiable decision.
The last time a match in the top two German soccer leagues was abandoned was in March 2022, after an assistant referee was hit on the head by a cup thrown by a spectator during a Bundesliga match between VfL Bochum and Borussia Mönchengladbach. It was the eighth match to be abandoned in the 60-year history of the top flight.
