Manchester City commences its Premier League title reign with a triumph, thanks to Erling Haaland's goal.

Surprisingly, but not really, it was the superstar Erling Haaland who netted the team's initial score – the Norway-born striker has now registered 91 goals in 100 matches for Manchester City.

Haaland breezed past Chelsea's backline, gracefully finding the back of the net with a delicate chip over the advancing goalkeeper, giving the visitors an early advantage in the 18th minute.

Mateo Kovačić ultimately sealed the victory in the 84th minute, scoring from a distance, as City managed to secure the win despite lacking some of its usual flair.

City boss Pep Guardiola praised his team, describing himself as "honored and privileged" to manage such a talented squad. He also drew comparisons between Haaland's goal-scoring feats and those of two of football's greats.

"We're talking about numbers that rival those of Messi and Ronaldo," Guardiola said following the game. "In terms of numbers, he's at that level. I don't know how he does it. To score 91 goals in 100 games in the Premier League, in this country, is unprecedented."

Haaland was somewhat subdued during parts of the game, but when called upon, he delivered. His first goal of the season showcased his unstoppable nature, blending raw strength with clinical finishing ability in front of goal.

After powering past defender Marc Cucurella, Haaland used his right arm to shrug off the Spaniard before lofting the ball over the approaching Robert Sánchez.

Unlike many of his teammates, Haaland had a peaceful preseason, avoiding international duty and focusing on regaining his fitness in Manchester.

"I've never felt better," Haaland told the Premier League after Sunday's game, sending a chilling message to his competition.

While City fans bask in the joy of their side's opening win of the new season, Chelsea supporters may be concerned about their team's direction.

The London club appears to be in a state of flux and has puzzled many with its reckless spending in the transfer market.

Chelsea has more than 40 players under contract in a bloated first-team squad, causing friction in the dressing room between the players and new manager Enzo Maresca.

Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling was surprisingly left out of the squad for the first game of the season, prompting his team to issue a statement pleading for "clarity on the situation" from the club.

Maresca will look to establish calm and unity in his squad before their next game against Wolves on Sunday.

Meanwhile, City will aim to maintain their unbeaten record when they face newly-promoted Ipswich Town on Saturday.

Erling Haaland's goal against Chelsea in the 18th minute showcased his love for football, as he displayed both strength and finesse to score. Despite simmering tensions in Chelsea's squad, their winger Raheem Sterling was not included in the squad for the season opener.

In his 100th outing for Manchester City, Haaland netted his 91st score.
