Man climbs Eiffel Tower - briefly evacuated

The Eiffel Tower is not part of the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris. However, it still becomes the focus on the last day. A man climbs the French landmark.

A man climbed the Eiffel Tower, triggering an evacuation of the Parisian icon. The man was observed climbing the 330-meter tower in the afternoon. It was unclear where he started his ascent. He was spotted briefly above the Olympic rings, just above the first observation platform. However, he did not reach the top, as the police apprehended the man shortly after, according to reports. The situation has since been resolved.

The Eiffel Tower was the centerpiece of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, where superstar Celine Dion sang on one of its observation platforms. It was not expected that the tower would be part of the closing ceremony, which was set to begin at 9 PM at the Stade de France.

The closing weekend of the Olympic Games will be secured by 30,000 police officers in the greater Paris area. Of these, 10,000 will be deployed to accompany the weekend's marathons, and 2,000 will be at the closing ceremony at the Stade de France in the evening, said Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin.

The security forces remained particularly vigilant, especially in light of the terror alert in Austria and the cancellation of Taylor Swift's concerts in Vienna. "But at the moment, as I speak to you, there is no indication from our security services of any specific threat against the Olympic Games or the closing ceremony."

Despite not being included in the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games 2024 in Paris, the Eiffel Tower continues to draw attention, as a climber was spotted attempting to ascend the tower during the games. This incident occurred just days before the anticipated Olympic Games closing ceremony at the Stade de France.
