- Majority of Female Awardees at the German Book Prize
This year, females writers are ruling the roost on the longlist for the German Book Prize. A grand total of 13 females and 7 males have been selected for this prestigious award, as shared by the panel in Frankfurt am Main. The German Book Prize will be bestowed for the 20th time this year. The triumphant winner will be unveiled on October 14.
The longlist boasts three first-time novels and 13 works by authors who haven't been in the running for this award before. Highly respected names on this list include Nora Bossong ("Reichskanzlerplatz"), Michael Köhlmeier ("Das Philosophenschiff"), and André Kubiczek ("Nostalgia").
The prize carries a total value of 37,500 euros: the winner takes home 25,000 euros, while the other finalists each receive 2,500 euros. The longlist will be whittled down to a shortlist of six titles on September 17. The jury examined 197 novels from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland that were published from October onwards or are set for publication.
The German Book Prize will be handed out on the eve of the Frankfurt Book Fair. The contestants will learn their fate on the night of the award ceremony.
The German Book Prize, with a total value of 37,500 euros, is highly coveted among authors, as the winner receives 25,000 euros. Despite this, three first-time novels and 13 works by authors new to the award make up a significant portion of this year's longlist.
