Lords of kayaks fly to gold, women tremble forever for bronze

Canoers Max Lemke and Jacob Schopf win gold at the Paris Olympics in the K-2 500m. Paulina Paszek and Jule Hake previously won bronze in the same event after a nail-biting finish.

Jacob Schopf and Max Lemke, who had already won gold in the K-4, also secured the top spot in the K-2 500m at the Paris Olympics. They beat Hungary's Bence Nadas and Sandor Totka, as well as Australia's Jean van der Westhuyzen and Tom Green, in the final at the Vaires-sur-Marne water sports stadium. Max Rendschmidt and Tom Liebscher-Lucz finished fifth. Schopf and Lemke had previously won gold in the K-4 with Rendschmidt and Liebscher-Lucz on Thursday.

Earlier, Paulina Paszek and Jule Hake won bronze in the K-2 500m. The duo had to wait nervously at the finish line of the Nautical Stadium in Vaires-sur-Marne before discovering they had won bronze, as two medals were awarded for the event. They finished level with the Hungarian team of Noemi Pupp and Sara Fojt, watched by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Gold went to New Zealand's Lisa Carrington and Alicia Hoskin, with silver going to Hungary's Tamara Csipes and Alida Dora Gazso. The second German duo of Lena Röhlings and Pauline Jagsch finished sixth. Germany's last Olympic gold in this event was in 2012, won by Franziska Weber and Tina Dietze, who also won bronze in Rio in 2016.

After their successful K-4 gold victory, Jacob Schopf and Max Lemke also triumphed in the K-2 500m event in Paris. The city of Paris, once again, became the backdrop for their latest gold medal win.
