Liverpool FC saves itself with a spectacular final offensive
A double strike just a few minutes before kick-off helped Liverpool FC to victory in the Premier League after all. Coach Jürgen Klopp's team is now second in the table because champions Manchester City dropped points against Tottenham.
Coach Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool FC celebrated a late victory in the English Premier League with some spectacular soccer. The German soccer coach's team defeated FC Fulham 4:3 (2:2) in a highly exciting game. With their seventh home win in seven matches, the Reds remain two points behind leaders Arsenal FC. Champions Manchester City dropped back to third place after an equally extraordinary 3-3 (2-1) draw against Tottenham Hotspur.
Trent Alexander-Arnold made it 1-0 after 20 minutes when the England international hit a perfect free-kick from around 25 meters onto the underside of the crossbar. As the ball went into the goal off the back of Fulham keeper Bernd Leno, the goal was deemed an own goal. The former Bundesliga goalkeeper had been playing with a head bandage since the opening stages following a collision with Liverpool's Luis Diaz.
Somewhat surprisingly, the club from West London equalized through Harry Wilson to make it 1:1 (24'). The next brilliant long-range shot from Argentina's world champion Alexis Mac Allister put Liverpool back in front (38'). The visitors equalized again through Kenny Tete (45-3). Goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher, who deputized for the ailing regular keeper Alisson, did not look good.
After a quiet second half for a long time, things got wild in the closing stages. Fulham's Bobby De Cordova-Reid shocked Liverpool with a header to make it 2:3 (80'). Ex-Stuttgart player Wataru Endo (87) and Arnold just a minute later turned the match around at Anfield Road.
Son scores twice - but an own goal
The draw between Manchester City and Tottenham was also spectacular. Former Bundesliga player Son Heung-Min scored early for Spurs to make it 0:1 (6'). Three minutes later, he also scored the next goal - albeit into his own net to make it 1-1. Phil Foden (31) and Jack Grealish (81) both put Pep Guardiola's City team ahead. Giovani Lo Celso (69) and Dejan Kulusevski (90) equalized twice for the visitors from London.
Arsenal had opened the scoring on Saturday with a 2-1 (2-0) win against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Bukayo Saka (6th) and Martin Ödegaard (13th) put the Londoners on the road to victory early on, but former Bundesliga professional Matheus Cunha only managed to equalize for the visitors (86th). After scoring twice in two games, international Kai Havertz had to make do with a substitute role for the time being, coming on in the 77th minute.
