Wimbledon - Lisicki believes in Kerber coup at Wimbledon

Sabine Lisicki surprises German compatriot Angelique Kerber at Wimbledon. "She looks fantastic. She's in great shape. And once you've won a tournament, anything is possible," Lisicki told the German Press Agency before the start of the third Grand Slam tournament. Kerber won Wimbledon in 2018. On this Friday, she will find out in the draw who she will face first.

Since the birth of her daughter Liana, the former world number one returned to the tour at the turn of the year and has been fighting to keep up with the extended world elite ever since. The 36-year-old failed in the first round at the Australian Open and the French Open. At the Wimbledon warm-up tournaments in Berlin and Bad Homburg, she was eliminated after the first match each time. In the world rankings, Kerber has fallen back to position 221.

"After a long break, you just need a few months. Angie is playing better and better from week to week," Lisicki, who lost to the Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli in the Wimbledon final in 2013, commented.

"Why not Angie?"

Lisicki is currently on a break due to her pregnancy. All the more, the 34-year-old will be rooting for her teammate Kerber. "One player always causes an upset at the Grand Slams. Why not Angie? She has so much experience on grass and she will fight until she falls down," Lisicki predicted. Kerber's playing style suits Lisicki's opinion of the quick, slippery tennis court. "Angie loves to counter. She plays unbelievably flat balls and moves exceptionally well," Lisicki praised, who had to experience Kerber's abilities on grass from close range in 2012. Lisicki lost to her fellow countrywoman in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon after a hard-fought match.

  1. Sabine Lisicki looked forward to the upcoming Grand Slam tournament, expressing her support for Angelique Kerber, despite her recent struggles, to the German Press Agency.
  2. Despite her early exits from Wimbledon warm-up tournaments in Berlin and Bad Homburg, Kerber's improved form in recent weeks has given hope to her German compatriot, Sabine Lisicki.
  3. Aurally, the German Press Agency reported that Lisicki anticipated a potential upset from Kerber at the Grand Slam tournament, attributing her optimism to Kerber's grass court expertise and fighting spirit.
  4. As the WTA's schedules allow, Angelique Kerber and Sabine Lisicki will both make their appearances in the Grand Slam tournament as representatives of Germany, potentially showcasing their collective tennis talents at Wimbledon.
  5. In light of her own Grand Slam experience, having reached the Wimbledon final against Marion Bartoli in 2013, Sabine Lisicki believes that Kerber's quick and slippery playing style could prove advantageous at the upcoming Grand Slam tournament, enhancing her chances of an upset victory.
