Like a "soccer god": plenty of praise for BVB defender Hummels
TV pundit Matthias Sammer described him as "world class", sporting director Sebastian Kehl raved about an "outstanding performance" and coach Edin Terzic even compared him to a "soccer god".
The performance of Dortmund's defensive boss Mats Hummels in the 3:1 (1:1) coup at the San Siro commanded great respect from everyone involved. The 34-year-old veteran proved to be the best player on the pitch in the duel with AC Milan with his great strength in tackles and impressive build-up play.
"We can be proud today"
Not least thanks to his gala performance, BVB advanced to the round of 16 on the penultimate matchday of what is probably the most difficult Champions League group. "It's definitely a sign that we've grown up. We can be proud today," commented the international. The 2014 world champion recalled Borussia's less convincing matches on the European stage in the past. "In the past, we often collapsed in such away games - when the going got tough."
Despite all the praise, Hummels remained self-critical: "I've been a little too inconsistent for my liking in recent weeks. That's why I hope that the basic level now returns to where it used to be."
Performances like those in Milan should also help him earn a regular place in the national team. "Mats has seen and experienced everything in soccer. He's not only important because of his quality, but also because of his experience. He played an unbelievably great game and gave us a lot of security," praised Terzic.
In the thrilling Champions League match, Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels dominated against AC Milan, showcasing his skills in both defensive tackles and brilliant build-up play, qualifying Dortmund for the round of 16.
Following his outstanding Champion League performance against AC Milan, Mats Hummels' consistent play could potentially secure him a spot in the German national team, with coach Terzic highlighting his valuable experience and quality.
