Coach Marco Rose 's team won 2:1 (2:1) against newcomers 1. FC Heidenheim and thus overtook the now fifth-placed runners-up Borussia Dortmund, who will not play the top match at league leaders Bayer Leverkusen until Sunday.
VfL Wolfsburg suffered a further setback with a 3:1 (1:2) defeat at VfL Bochum, their sixth away defeat in a row. Borussia Mönchengladbach came away with a 2:1 (0:0) win against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. FC Bayern Munich's home match against Union Berlin was called off due to the heavy snowfall.
