Mays, considered one of the best baseball players in history, leaves behind his family and former team, the San Francisco Giants. "My old man kicked the bucket peacefully, with his close pals around. I want to shout out big thanks for the non-stop love and backing you've given him over the years. He was your vitality boost," stated Michael Mays in a heartfelt joint declaration with the Giants.

Mays left a permanent imprint that reached far beyond the baseball field. "We lost a legend. He left a powerful impact not only on baseball but also on the fabric of America. He was an inspiration, a hero, someone we'll remember forever and deeply miss," stated Giants chairman, Greg Johnson.

The nickname is said to have originated from a New York sports scribe who missed uttering it during his rookie season. He made his debut in the 1951 season, sparkling with 20 home runs and snagging the Rookie of the Year trophy. Just three years later, he led the Giants to the World Series triumph, the last for the franchise before their relocation to San Francisco.

Mays hung up his cleats in 1973 and concluded his career with the New York Mets, after spending the years 1951 to 1972 with the Giants. He belted 660 home runs and ranks sixth on the MLB list. As a 24-time All-Star, he was enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979. In 2015, he was bestowed with the Presidential Medal of Freedom by American President Barack Obama.
