The training camp of four-time German football champion 1. FC Kaiserslautern in South Tyrol is being overshadowed by a death. According to the second-tier club, the well-known and popular equipment manager Peter Miethe passed away on Wednesday evening "in a tragic accident". He was 62 years old. "1. FC Kaiserslautern is in shock. Our hearts are broken," the club wrote on X about their long-term employee and the "soul of the club".
Details about the cause of death were not disclosed by the club. "We mourn together with his family and friends for a great man. Rest in peace, dear Piet - we will miss you greatly," the Palatinates wrote: "Out of respect for the relatives, we ask for no further inquiries."
Miethe had been active for the club for more than 20 years, taking on the main responsibility as equipment manager in 2022. He was particularly noticeable at matches because he, regardless of the weather, was always present in short trousers and a T-shirt.
On Wednesday evening, the FCK had invited trainers and staff to a traditional get-together. According to a post by the club on X, they went for a bike ride through the beautiful Obervinschgau afterwards. After the death, the club abandoned its training camp and set off on the journey home. "Professional training sessions are suspended for the time being, media inquiries are initially not processed, and the #Betze channels are temporarily shut down," the club announced in the afternoon: "The scheduled test match on Sunday will not take place."
Several clubs and the German Football League expressed their condolences on social media. "Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and the entire FCK family," the DFL wrote on X.
