- Kroppen/Unruh shooting for an Olympic medal in the semi-finals
The German mixed team of Michelle Kroppen/Florian Unruh has reached the semi-finals in archery at the Olympics and is aiming for a medal. The world runners-up defeated Mexico's Alejandra Valencia/Matias Grande 5:1 in the quarter-finals at the Paris Invalidendom. Earlier, the duo had narrowly won 5:4 against Colombia in their first match. They will face the USA next (15:50) for a place in the final, with a bronze medal match awaiting them in case of defeat.
South Korea, with Lim Sihyeon and Kim Woojin, is the gold medal favorite. The team snatched the title from the Germans at the 2021 World Championships in Berlin. In a different lineup, the Koreans had won the Olympics in Tokyo three years ago. Kroppen/Unruh finished ninth in Japan. A Germany vs. South Korea match can only happen in the final in Paris.
Both Kroppen and Unruh are also still in the individual competition, as the only Germans to reach the round of 16. The 31-year-old Berliner Unruh won his first two matches on Thursday. Kroppen (28), who plays for SV GutsMuths Jena, also advanced. Unruh will face Britain's Tom Hall on Sunday (10:48), while Kroppen meets former world number one Deepika Kumari from India on Saturday (10:22).
South Korea, being the gold medal favorite, has a strong archery team consisting of Lim Sihyeon and Kim Woojin. In contrast, the German mixed team, which includes Michelle Kroppen and Florian Unruh, had a close encounter with them at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago, finishing ninth.
