The retired television commissioner Walter Kreye ("Der Alte") will step in for his ailing acting colleague Horst Janson at the Bad Hersfeld Festspiele. The organizers announced this on Monday. The piece "Wie im Himmel" is scheduled to have its premiere on July 26 in the Stiftsruine Bad Hersfeld.

Widely known to a broad audience is the 81-year-old Kreye mainly through his leading role in the ZDF crime series "Der Alte," which he held from 2002 to 2012. He has appeared in more than 160 film and television productions to date.

Kreye plays the role of Sprengmeister Eric in Bad Hersfeld. It was announced in mid-June that Horst Janson (88) had to cancel this role due to illness. Kreye has already arrived in Bad Hersfeld for rehearsals and is looking forward to the role in his own words: "Finally, the first work in Hersfeld," he is quoted as saying.

Intendant Joern Hinkel is directing. He has wanted to work with Kreye for a long time, according to his own words: "Walter Kreye and I have been circling each other for a few years now, unfortunately only telephonically. Up until now, there has never been a collaboration, but now he is taking on the role of Erik in 'Wie im Himmel.' "

The closed 80-year-old Erik is described in the announcement as a particularly moving character in the production, as he sings in a choir just to be near his youth love Olga (played by Brigitte Grothum).

For Intendant and Director Joern Hinkel, Walter Kreye is a master of language: "You can tell that he comes from a family that values the spoken and written word highly. All the more intriguing is that his role, that of a silent choir singer who prefers to stay in the background, but who, exceptionally, makes one of the most beautiful love declarations I have read in a theater piece."

With over 90,000 visitors and visitors in the previous year, the Festspiele in Bad Hersfeld belong to the largest and most traditional in Germany.
