Kimmich comments on Bayern's stance in the vaccine controversy
German national footballer Joshua Kimmich has stated that the negative comments he made about FC Bayern Munich in a recent ZDF documentary don't represent his current standing with the club. The 29-year-old discusses the troublesome period of the vaccine debate during the Corona pandemic in the documentary. He felt deserted by the club during this period, leaving him disheartened and disillusioned.
"It's been around two to three years since then, a period when other people held positions of responsibility as well," Kimmich mentioned after the 1:1 draw against Switzerland in the EM game in Frankfurt on Sunday night. At that time, Bayern was in the process of transitioning Oliver Kahn as CEO.
Kimmich's contract with Munich expires in 2025
No response has been received from Bayern regarding the ZDF documentary thus far. "As I said, those comments were from two to three years ago. That's the unique aspect of the documentary, that it wasn't made with current statements, but about the past," Kimmich explained. The documentary has been in production for multiple years. "Therefore, there are one or two statements from the past," he added.
Kimmich's clarifications are significant in the face of ongoing rumors suggesting a potential transfer and his early departure from the German record champions in the summer. His contract with Bayern, which is highly valued, runs out in 2025. The club could stand to gain a substantial transfer fee if they decide to sell him in the summer. Alternatively, they could opt for a contract extension.
"It's not just up to me," Kimmich said before the EM began regarding his future. "What does the club think? What does the club want?" These are crucial questions for him. In general, his situation isn't straightforward because he still has an ongoing contract. However, he wants to concentrate on the home EM first. "Of course, there will definitely be a conversation," Kimmich said: "And FC Bayern will definitely be my first point of contact."
