Kiel pushes HSV into relegation place

Hamburger SV loses its direct promotion place in the 2nd Bundesliga. Holstein Kiel squeezes past with a win against Wehen Wiesbaden. Fürth and Düsseldorf are also in the thick of the action, while Fortuna's goal-scoring frenzy is undeterred by an injury to the referee.

1st FC Nuremberg - Fortuna Düsseldorf xx:xx (0:3)

The injury to referee Richard Hempel overshadowed the match between 1. FC Nürnberg and Fortuna Düsseldorf in the 2nd Bundesliga in the first half. It had to be interrupted in the 27th minute and could only be continued after an interruption of around ten minutes. Fourth official Assad Nouhoum replaced the injured referee.

Fortuna won 5:0 (3:0) at Franconia thanks to a Vincent Vermeij treble and are now fourth, just one point behind Hamburger SV, who drew 2:2 at leaders FC St. Pauli on Friday. Vermeij (39./45.+3/56., hand penalty after video evidence), Ao Tanaka (41.) and Jona Niemiec (84.) ensured a clear result in favor of the Rhinelanders.

Düsseldorf were much more effective in finishing goals and made everything clear within a few minutes after the break. For the club, the break had a very negative effect due to the referee's injury, and order was completely lost. Fortuna celebrated their second win in a row and maintained their good chances in the promotion race. The Franconians, on the other hand, were unable to make amends for their 4-1 defeat in Karlsruhe a week ago.

Hempel had apparently injured his calf and the teams were initially sent to the dressing room. The referee was unable to restart the game. It was the 26-year-old's fourth appearance in the 2nd division this season.

Eintracht Braunschweig - SpVgg Greuther Fürth 0:1 (0:1)

SpVgg Greuther Fürth are right at the top after their fifth win in a row. Coach Alexander Zorniger's team won 1-0 (1-0) at Eintracht Braunschweig and, with 27 points, are now just one point behind Hamburger SV in the relegation places. By contrast, the situation is becoming increasingly bleak for penultimate-placed Braunschweig. The gap to 16th place is already eight points for coach Daniel Scherning's team after Schalke's victory the previous day (4:0 against Osnabrück).

Julian Green scored the only goal with a penalty after a questionable foul by Braunschweig defender Ermin Bicakcic on Armindo Sieb (31'). Particularly remarkable: The Spielvereinigung did not concede a single goal in their five wins in a row.

Zorniger, who extended his contract with the Cloverleafs until 2026 on Monday, saw his team put in a dominant performance right from the start. Particularly in the early stages, the visitors controlled and combined well in front of 17,517 spectators in snowy conditions and sub-zero temperatures. In the third game under new coach Scherning, the hosts came out of the locker room in a better position, but the equalizer was not to be scored in the contested match.

Holstein Kiel - Wehen Wiesbaden 3:2 (2:0)

Holstein Kiel moved into second place in the table. The Storks won their home match against SV Wehen Wiesbaden 3:2 (2:0). Kiel are two points behind the Millerntor team and one point ahead of HSV.

Steven Skrzybski (19th, penalty) scored the opening goal for the team from Schleswig-Holstein. Gino Fechner had brought down Lewis Holtby in the penalty area. Fiete Arp (37) increased the lead towards the end of the first half. Finn Porath (59) made it 3:0 for the hosts. Ivan Prtajin (81st and 90.+3, penalty after video evidence) reduced the deficit.

Kiel celebrated their third win in a row and are now unbeaten in four games. It was the second defeat in a row for the visitors; the 2-0 loss at SpVgg Greuther Fürth was the first defeat for the Hessians after four wins in a row.
