Martin Kaymer and Stephan Jaeger from Germany had a decent beginning at the 124th US Open. They each shot a 70 in Pinehurst, North Carolina, and are tied for 16th place following the first day.

Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland and American Patrick Cantlay currently lead the third Major tournament of the year with a 65-stroke round each. Third place goes to Swedish golfer Ludvig Aberg, who finished with a 66-stroke round.

Scheffler struggles

The top-ranked American player, Scottie Scheffler, ended the first day at the challenging Par-70 course with a 71-stroke score, placing him in a tie for 34th place. The 27-year-old has won five PGA Tour events this season, including the prestigious Masters in Augusta for the second time. Forty-eight-year-old legend Tiger Woods managed only a 74-stroke round and is now tied for 86th place. The 15-time Major champion from California needs to improve on day two to make it to the crucial rounds on the weekend.

Kaymer scores big at Pinehurst No.2

Martin Kaymer, the 39-year-old pro from Mettmann, played well at Pinehurst No.2. In 2014, he was the only German golfer to win the US Open there and claim his second Major title in his career. Kaymer's 2014 US Open triumph in Pinehurst was his final individual title. In 2022, Kaymer joined the contentious and Saudi-backed LIV Tour. Jaeger also had an impressive showing on day one of the US Open. The 35-year-old Munich native, who currently resides in the US, maintained his slim hope for the title with a 70-stroke round.
