Art treats - Kasper König's private collection is auctioned off

The long-standing director of Cologne Museum Ludwig, Prof. Kasper König, is putting up for auction his significant private collection. Over 400 works of modern and contemporary art are involved, according to the commissioned Cologne auction house Van Ham. Not all appraisals have been completed yet, but it is expected to yield several millions of Euros, a spokesperson said.

The highest-valued piece so far - a so-called Date painting by the late Japanese artist On Kawara - was estimated at 500,000 to 700,000 Euros. There are also works by artists such as Sigmar Polke (1941-2010), William Copley (1919-1996), Thomas Bayrle (born 1937), and Richard Artschwager (1923-2013).

The works will be presented in an exhibition curated by König himself at the auction house. The preview is planned for September 27-30. The auctions will run in several stages on October 1 and 2.

The collection of modern and contemporary art, including pieces by Sigmar Polke and Richard Artschwager, is part of Prof. Kasper König's private collection from North Rhine-Westphalia, specifically his home city Cologne. Some of these artworks, like those by Thomas Bayrle and William Copley, will be showcased in a personal exhibition curated by König at the auction house in Germany.
