Jürgen Klopp loses German coaching duel with B-Elf

For Liverpool FC, everything is clear ahead of the final group game in the Europa League. Jürgen Klopp took advantage of the luxury to call up the reserves against outsiders St. Gilloise. The result: Liverpool lose the duel between the German coaches.

Alexander Blessin won the German coach duel in the Europa League against the great Jürgen Klopp with favorites Liverpool FC. However, the 2:1 (2:1) home win against the Reds was not enough for Blessin's Belgian first division club Union St. Gilloise to advance to the intermediate round.

As FC Toulouse won 2:1 (0:0) at LASK from Linz in the parallel Group E match, the French side secured second place with eleven points behind Liverpool (twelve), who went straight through to the round of 16. St. Gilloise (8) will therefore continue to play in the Conference League in the new year, while LASK (3) have been eliminated. Mohamed Amoura (32) and Cameron Puertas (43) scored for Blessin's team. Liverpool, with numerous reserves in the starting eleven, equalized through Jarell Quansah (40).

"We all saw the same game and it was a deserved win for Union," said Klopp, assessing the match. "I completely changed the team and I think the changes we made were too much for the rhythm." They would have liked to take a point from the "very intense game on a really difficult pitch", but: "Nobody got injured, so we'll recover, go home and move on."

Jose Mourinho will have to take a detour via the intermediate round with Italian first division side AS Roma. Although Roma won 3:0 (2:0) against Sheriff Tiraspol from Moldova at the end of the group stage, their 13 points left them behind Slavia Prague (15), who won 4:0 (4:0) against Servette Geneva under former Nuremberg coach Rene Weiler.
