Jürgen Klopp apparently rejects offer from USA

US National Team Coach Gregg Berhalter disappointed with team at Copa America. Now he's out of a job. Two years before the Home-World Cup, the Americans are reportedly trying for a sensational deal: they apparently want Jurgen Klopp.

Two years before the Home-WM, the US Soccer Federation may be attempting a spectacular coaching deal. The Americans want to sign Jurgen Klopp, according to the English newspaper "The Independent," without specifying sources. According to "The Athletic," Klopp reportedly rejected the offer from the 2026 World Cup host. Previously, it was reported that there had already been initial contact with the 50-year-old or his representatives. The Federation, which had dismissed Gregg Berhalter as coach after the disappointing group stage exit at the Copa America, initially had no comment on the report.

Klopp had left Liverpool FC after nine years and announced that he would first take a break from coaching. A possible job in the USA could be lucrative and exciting: The Americans are co-hosting the World Cup in 2026 with Canada and Mexico. Former goalkeeper Tim Howard recently urged his federation in a column to sign Klopp and even offered to speak with the coach personally at his summer house in Spain. "I believe I could sell him. One hundred percent," Howard wrote in the "Daily Mail."

Such a signing would, however, come with significant hurdles - primarily financial ones. To get Klopp, the US Soccer Federation would have to "move heaven and earth," as Fox Sports put it. Before Klopp, there had already been former US coach Jurgen Klinsmann from 2011 to 2016. In the previous year, Berhalter was hired as coach for the second time. At the Copa America, which the USA is currently hosting and where the final matches are taking place this weekend, the North Americans were eliminated before the knockout phase. Afterwards, there was heavy criticism for the 50-year-old, whose team featuring former Bundesliga professionals Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, and Chris Richards had underperformed so disappointingly.

The US Soccer Federation is reportedly pursuing a sensational coaching change, aiming to sign Jürgen Klopp for the 2026 World Cup. Despite the lucrative offer, Klopp reportedly turned down the opportunity to coach the US National Team after Copa America.
