John Burnside, a revered Scottish author, left us after battling a short illness on Wednesday. He was 69. Burnside penned numerous noteworthy works, including "Lies About My Father," "Something Like Happiness," "What Light There Is - On the Beauty of the Moment," and "On Love and Magic - I Put a Spell on You."
Born in 1955 in the Scottish town of Dunfermline, Burnside pursued higher education in English and European Literature at Cambridge. After spending years in the computer industry as an analyst and software engineer, he embraced his passion for writing.
Life wasn't easy for Burnside. He had to navigate the hardship of having an alcoholic father, which he profoundly detailed in "Lies About My Father" and "Like Everyone Else." Despite these challenges, he persevered and won the Petrarca Prize in Germany in 2011. His books also gained attention on "The Literary Quartet", a TV show.
Besides writing, Burnside was known for his poetry and received several honors, such as the T.S. Eliot Prize and the David Cohen Prize. Westland, the Publishing Director, expressed, "His work was enigmatic but never bewildering. Instead, he revealed sense in the peculiar. Reading him felt like watching the darkness give way."
Burnside's writings often revolved around the inexplicable. He declared, "I'm almost crazy, and I align myself with the grays that I absolutely believe in at that moment, knowing rationality alone is not enough." "I'm more interested in irrationality than anything else: Though it can be quite perilous, it can also be stunningly beautiful."
