Italy in the Davis Cup semi-finals thanks to Sinner

Tennis star Jannik Sinner has led the Italian Davis Cup team into the semi-finals. The world number four secured his home country a 2:1 win over the Netherlands with two victories in singles and doubles.

In the final round in Malaga, Italy will face the winner of the fourth and final quarter-final between Serbia and Great Britain, which will be played on Thursday evening. Finland and Australia have qualified for the first semi-final on Friday.

Sinner, who was only stopped in the final by the Serbian Grand Slam record winner Novak Djokovic last Sunday at the ATP Finals for the best tennis players in the world, first managed to equalize the score 1:1 against the Netherlands with a 7:6 (7:3), 6:1 against Tallon Griekspoor. Shortly afterwards, the 22-year-old also stood in for Simone Bolelli in the doubles, and together with Lorenzo Sonego he beat Griekspoor/Wesley Koolhof 6:3, 6:4.

The German Davis Cup team had missed out on the group stage of the tradition-steeped team competition due to a qualifying defeat against Switzerland at the beginning of February. The team led by captain Michael Kohlmann managed to advance in the relegation play-off with hosts Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Jannik Sinner's dual wins in singles and doubles against the Netherlands propelled Italy into a 2:1 advantage in the Davis Cup, securing their spot in the semi-finals. In the upcoming Davis Cup final round in Malaga, Sinner and his team will face the victor of the quarter-final between Serbia and Great Britain.
