Italy in the Davis Cup final thanks to Sinner

Revenge was taken: tennis star Jannik Sinner led the Italian team to the Davis Cup final and inflicted two heavy defeats on his rival Novak Djokovic.

The world number four first won his eagerly awaited singles duel against Grand Slam record winner Djokovic in Malaga 6:2, 2:6, 7:5. Sinner then took the decisive point in the doubles alongside Lorenzo Sonego against the duo Djokovic/Miomir Kecmanovic with a 6:3, 6:4 victory over Serbia to secure a 2:1 triumph. In the final on Sunday in Malaga, Italy will face Australia, who beat outsiders Finland 2-0 on Friday.

Successful revenge

Six days after the final of the ATP Finals for the world's best players, which Djokovic had won against Sinner, both top stars once again offered some top-class tennis. This time, the Italian had the better of the match. At the start of the semi-final duel, Kecmanovic had put the Serbian team ahead with a 6:7 (7:9), 6:2, 6:1 against Lorenzo Musetti.

The German Davis Cup team had missed out on the group stage of the tradition-steeped team competition due to a qualifying defeat against Switzerland at the beginning of February. Captain Michael Kohlmann's team managed to stay in the relegation play-off with hosts Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Jannik Sinner's victories in both his singles match against Novak Djokovic and the doubles match with Lorenzo Sonego helped Italy secure their spot in the Davis Cup final against Australia. This marked a significant turnaround in their rivaly, as Djokovic had previously defeated Sinner in the final of the ATP Finals six days prior.

In the upcoming Davis Cup final, Jannik Sinner and his Italian teammates will look to continue their winning streak against Australia, who advanced to the final after defeating Finland 2-0 in their semi-final match.
